The Ohio University CALL Practice and Research group announces the call for proposals and registration for the 7th annual free CALL conference on April 3rd, 2015 at Ohio University. We have had a great turnout for the past six years and look forward to another inspiring gathering here in beautiful Athens, Ohio. The theme of the conference will be “The Role of Automated Tools in CALL.”

We are very excited to announce that our keynote speaker will be Dr. Volker Hegelheimer from Iowa State University. Dr. Hegelheimer will be speaking about Automated writing evaluation and the many exciting related projects he is working on at Iowa State.

We will also have a number of concurrent sessions, hands-on workshops and a technology fair. We encourage anyone interested in sharing their research or practice related to technology in the second language classroom to submit a proposal to our conference.  We invite proposals for paper presentations, technology fair presentations, and hands-on workshops. The conference will take place from 9 AM-5 PM and will wrap up with a conference dinner at Jackie O’s Public House and Brewery.

Most common foreign languages studied at lower secondary level in the EU28 in 2012

English, French and German still most common foreign languages studied at lower secondary  level in the EU28 in 2012…… but Spanish learning has increased more.

In the EU28 in 2012, English was still the most commonly studied foreign language at lower secondary level, with  96.7% of pupils learning it, far ahead of French (34.1%), German (22.1%) and Spanish (12.2%). The importance
of English as a foreign language in the EU is also confirmed by its leadership in nearly all Member States. Since Croatia’s accession, there are 24 official languages recognised within the EU. In addition there are
indigenous regional, minority languages and languages that have been brought into the EU by migrant populations.

On the occasion of the European Day of Languages2, celebrated each year on 26 September, Eurostat, the  statistical office of the European Union, publishes data on language learning at school. The general objectives
of this event are to alert the public to the importance of language learning, to promote the rich linguistic and cultural  diversity of Europe and to encourage lifelong language learning in and out of school.

Joint ISO-UCM Meeting on Semantic Annotation, Universidad Complutense de Madrid 26 sept

Los días 24 y 25 de septiembre próximos tendrá lugar el “Joint ISO-UCM Meeting on Semantic Annotation”, en la Facultad de Filología de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Aunque los encuentros ISO de este tipo suelen ser de acceso restringido, los organizadores del mismo han negociado el libre acceso (previa inscripción) de todos los compañeros que deseen participar en el mismo. Por ello,  es una oportunidad única de conocer, por un lado, las distintas normas ISO que se están desarrollando en la actualidad sobre anotación semántica; y por otro, el mundo de la normalización y sus particulares formas de trabajo desde dentro.

Finalmente, este evento está asociado a la XIV Jornada de AETER, que se celebrará el próximo viernes, 26 de septiembre, también la Facultad de Filología de la UCM. De este evento ya se informó previamente a través de esta misma lista. No obstante, su programa va también adjunto, por si a alguno de los socios le pasó inadvertido en su momento.
