The conference brings together international keynote speakers and researchers who are researching and working on the borders of languages, languages pedagogy, and policy in contexts where people, and their migratory languages, are under pain and pressure.

Conference themes

Inspired by the above panels, the conference invites papers and panels on research, pedagogies (multilingual, multimodal, multisensory, intercultural), policy development, and teacher practice concerning the opportunities and possibilities for multiple languages. Papers and panels may also address the following (and related) themes:

  • Multilingualism in NGO education contexts
  • Policy and language advocacy for multiple languages in the classroom
  • Community schools and translanguaging in communities
  • Teacher education in multilingual classrooms
  • Languages and the intercultural citizen
  • Modern foreign languages and multiple languages in schools—affordances and possibilities
  • Languages in research, policy, teacher education
  • Multimodal pedagogies for supporting language learning
  • Critical and intercultural pedagogies
  • Languages in contexts of discrimination, trauma, and exclusion: Implications for educational psychology and counselling; identity; multiple language literacies

Panels and speakers

The conference will also include five plenary panels. The following invited researchers/practitioners will each lead a panel (supported by two other experts), on the themes below. The panel will be 90 minutes (roughly 60 mins presentation and supported by 30 minutes of discussion).

1. Angela Creese (University of Birmingham)  – Communities and education; translanguaging in communities; community schools

2. Mike Solly (British Council) – Languages for resilience: Languages education in the context of the Syrian crisis

3. Frances Giampapa (University of Bristol) – Children’s multilingual identities, language brokering, opportunities for multiple literacies; issues concerning ESOL/languages and mainstreaming

4. George Androulakis (University of Thessaly, Vólos)- Migration and schools: Policies for primary and secondary education in Europe.

We invite papers and panels that address these themes. Please submit a title, abstract of 300-350 words. Panels (or 3 or 4 participants) should include a title, brief introduction (50 words), title and abstract for each speaker (150-200 words each). Please include a brief bio of about 100 words for each speaker (include name and institution(s)).

Abstracts of papers and panels should be emailed to languages.2016@durham.ac.uk by 15th July 2016. Please include the name and email of the corresponding author. Abstracts will be reviewed by an advisory committee and participants will be notified of acceptance by 30th July 2016.

The Conference on Natural Language Processing (“Konferenz zur Verarbeitung natürlicher Sprache”, KONVENS) aims at offering a broad perspective on current research and developments within the interdisciplinary field of natural language processing. It allows researchers from all disciplines relevant to this field of research to present their work. The conference will take place September 19–21, 2016 in Bochum (Germany). We are pleased to announce that John Nerbonne and Barbara Plank will give invited talks at the conference.

Call for Papers

We welcome original, unpublished contributions on research, development, applications and evaluation, covering all areas of natural language processing, ranging from basic questions to practical implementations of natural language resources, components and systems.

The special theme of the 13th KONVENS is: “Processing non-standard data — commonalities and differences”.

A wide range of data can be considered “non-standard” because it deviates in one way or the other from standard written data such as newspaper texts. Examples include:
* data produced by language learners
* historical data
* data from social media
* (transcriptions of) spoken data

We especially encourage the submission of contributions comparing different types of non-standard data and their properties, focussing on their impact for natural language processing. For example, a feature common to many types of non-standard data is the use of non-standard spelling. However, spelling variation in learner data as compared to historical data is due to very different reasons and, most likely, resulting in very different types of non-standard spellings.

Topics that we would like to see addressed include:
* Common properties of (many) non-standard data, e.g. non-standard spelling, data sparseness, features of orality
* Impact of the commonalities and differences of non-standard data on the methods and tools that are applied to the data, e.g. normalization vs. tool adaptation, evaluation without gold standard, etc.

Formats

We welcome two types of contributions:
* Full papers for oral presentation (8 pages plus references)
* Short papers for presentation as posters (4 pages plus references)

Short papers/posters can be combined with a system demonstration. Reviews will be anonymous. Accepted full and short papers will be published in the conference proceedings.

Submissions must conform to the formatting guidelines, and must be made electronically through the conference website (see https://www.linguistics.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/konvens16/call/index.html#formatting-guidelines).

The conference languages are English and German. We encourage the submission of contributions in English.

From ideal to idiolect: the trajectories of nativeness within and without SLA research.

Newbolt Report 1921: only Standard is a full language, the rest is full of lower-class vulgarismo. School is crucial for SE to root.

Bernstein 1958: Some sociological determinants of perception. Low class language as a restricited code, not elaborated. Working class deficits.

There are as many native languages as native speakers, rejection of monolithic views. No fixed target to aim for, no model to study no baseline. Scholz (2002) rejects this idea. Morgan (1986) mastery of prestige rules is exploited socially to signa, membership to a higher class.

Weiss (2004) says two kinds of NS. One is subject to FLA , the other to education.

Should not be applied blindly . Reliability as a continuum. There are lots of different variables that may impact reliability: samples (size, proficiency,), instruments and the indices used.

RQ What is the overall observed reliability in 2009-2013 SLA research?

537 studies = 2,244 reliability coefficients

Aggregated all and obtained the median (and IQR) for 3 types of reliability

NAME
textutil — text utility

SYNOPSIS
textutil [command_option] [other_options] file …

DESCRIPTION
textutil can be used to manipulate text files of various formats, using the mechanisms provided by the Cocoa text system.

The first argument indicates the operation to perform, one of:

-help Show the usage information for the command and exit. This is the default command option if none is specified.

-info Display information about the specified files.

-convert fmt Convert the specified files to the indicated format and write each one back to the file system.

-cat fmt Read the specified files, concatenate them, and write the result out as a single file in
the indicated format.

fmt is one of: txt, html, rtf, rtfd, doc, docx, wordml, odt, or webarchive

There are some additional options for general use:

-extension ext Specify an extension to be used for output files (by default, the extension will be
determined from the format).

-output path Specify the file name to be used for the first output file.

-stdin Specify that input should be read from stdin rather than from files.

-stdout Specify that the first output file should go to stdout.

-encoding IANA_name | NSStringEncoding
Specify the encoding to be used for plain text or HTML output files (by default, the output encoding will be UTF-8). NSStringEncoding refers to one of the numeric values recognized by NSString. IANA_name refers to an IANA character set name as understood by CFString. The operation will fail if the file cannot be converted to the specified encoding.

Force all plain text input files to be interpreted using the specified encoding (by default, a file’s encoding will be determined from its BOM). The operation will fail if the file cannot be interpreted using the specified encoding.

loads all RTF files in the current directory, concatenates their contents, and writes the result out as

The textutil command exits 0 on success, and 1 on failure.
